Captain James Franklin Harris
1825-1902

James Franklin Harris was born to John Fletcher Harris and Jane Glazener Harris in March of 1825 in Buncombe County, North Carolina. Brother and sisters were John F., Larkin L., Augustin, Rebecca and William K. Harris. Later after his family moved to Gilmer Co. Georgia, Frank Harris married Elizabeth Delincy Searcy of Gilmer Co. Georgia on February 20th by B. B. Quillian. A year later, they gave birth to the first of their seven children.

On March 4, 1862, James Franklin Harris mustered into the 39th Georgia Regiment in Gilmer Co. at the rank of Private. During his time in the service of the Confederate States of America, he was advanced to the rank of 2nd Lt. prior to his capture at Vicksburg. After returning to Georgia, it appears the unit was reformed and he was advanced to 1st Lt. and then to Captain. During an engagement with enemy Union forces at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain to the north of Atlanta, Capt. Harris was severely wounded in the jaw, throat and neck from enemy gunfire from which he never fully recovered.

After the Civil War, he returned home to Gilmer County. The last of his three children were born after the Civil War, one being my Great Grandfather James Fletcher Harris. On February 9, 1891, Frank's wife Elizabeth passed away and was buried in Rock Creek Cemetery near Cherry Log, Gilmer County, Georgia next to two of her sons, James and Enoch, who apparenty died in infancy. After his wife's deth, we learn from Civil War pension records and Jenkins family history that he lived in the community of Blue Ridge, Fannin County, Georgia with his daughter Sarah Jane and son-in-law Thomas Jenkins up until at least early 1900. It is believed that his health was failing and he then went to live with his brother Augustin and his son Larkin L. Harris. Larkin and his wife took care of Augustin and Frank until their deaths here in Johnson County in the Sand Flat community, Texas.

Here today both descendants of family and of others who fought in the Civil War gather to honor Captain Frank Harris and his service to the Confederate States of America. We honor Frank Harris and all those who gave so much in this great struggle by our remembrance this day on October 12, 2002.

From the Annals of Upper Georgia
Centered in Gilmer County
by George Gordon Ward, 1965

Hiram Harris came from North Carolina about 115 years ago (about 1850) and bought land near the Goodman mill and settled upon it. He remained there until his death about 1874. Mr. Harris knew the trade of bricklaying, but spent most of his time on his farm.

Informed on main subjects and events, he was said to have been fairly educated and extensively read. He had a peculiar love of ancient history, which fact marked him as something of an antiquarian. He read much in the Bible but reserved to himself conclusions that resulted from such examination.

"He was a good neighbor, a kind parent and a great friend of education, wishing to see both educational institutions and the church prosper." During his last illness he was composed and calm, and assured his friends and family that he was ready to meet whatever the future held in store.

Captain Frank Harris, a prominent member of this family, seems to have long lived in Cherry Log district. He received, during the Civil War, wounds from which he never fully recovered. Shot in the mouth, palate and perhaps beyond that, he lived on with little hope of being again the man he was when he entered the war. The writer can recall seeing him when his head and beard were of a snowy whiteness.

He raised two sons of whom the author has knowledge, Bob and Tobe. Bob married Mary Hice. He died about 1894, Tobe lived much longer. Bob was the father of George W. Harris of College Pard, of which city he was mayor at the time of his death some 18 years ago (about 1947). Emma, a daughter, is the widow of Rube Young of Ellijay.

Mrs. Chris Plemmons of Boardtown is a daughter of Tobe Harris. Col. Joe Jenkins, former president of G. M. A. at Milledgeville, is a grandson, on his maternal side, of Capt. Frank Harris of Gilmer County.
